“Wise Resident Life” Faces Backlash Amidst Doctor’s Strike

  • by

Public sentiment towards doctors is currently strained due to a medical void created by physicians protesting against a proposed hike in medical school admissions. This situation seems to be impacting an upcoming medical drama, “Wise Resident Life”.

“Wise Resident Life” is an offshoot of the 2020-2021 series “Hospital Playlist”, and it portrays the camaraderie and day-to-day experiences of professors and doctors at the fictitious Yulje University Hospital. The show is slated to premiere on tvN in the first half of this year.

Earlier this month, tvN released a brief 15-second video captioned “Yulje is coming back soon”, hinting at the forthcoming drama. Initially, the video was met with excitement. However, as the doctors’ collective protest gained momentum, the comments started to reflect criticism.

Some viewers accused the drama of idealizing doctors, while others showed distaste, citing media reports about derogatory messages exchanged between the drama’s doctors about patients and nurses. Yet, there were also empathetic remarks, acknowledging the unfortunate timing of the drama’s broadcast.

The two “Hospital Playlist” series, which are the precursors to “Wise Resident Life”, were well-received, garnering high viewership ratings of 16 percent and 14 percent respectively. They portrayed doctors in a compassionate light.
