Russian Deputy Ambassador to India Roman Babushkin has said the S-400 missile system deal is a symbol of India’s strength of “sovereignty”. A Russian official has denied that the deal or other major agreements to be signed during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin last Monday were left out because of concerns over US sanctions.

Babushkin, while praising India on the defense deal, said, “The decision to purchase the S-400 missile system is a very strong example of how advanced our defense and strategic partnership is, and that India’s decision to choose its international partners for national security is a very strong example. How strong is the sovereignty.’ He also confirmed that the delivery of the first of five S-400 missile systems from Russia is expected to be completed this month.

During the one-day summit, several issues were discussed between Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and both sides signed 28 agreements. A 99-point joint statement was issued from both sides. But during this meeting, there was a possibility of signing a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement (RELOS) and the navies, but it remained.

Rejecting these speculations, Roman Babushkin said in an interview with the English daily ‘The Hindu’, ‘This conference was called in a very short time and that is the reason why some special agreements could not be completed.’ Babushkin also said that the naval agreement, RELOS and all other agreements will be completed by next year.

Babushkin said that in addition to bilateral relations, India-Russia cooperation on multilateral issues has increased. He also referred to India’s support to Russia to become an observer country at the Non-Aligned Meeting (NAM) this year and Russian support to India in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The Russian diplomat also spoke on India-Russia nuclear cooperation. He said the six-reactor Kudankulam nuclear power project is either operational, under construction, or about to be commissioned, and the Russian government awaits the Indian government’s response to a new project of six VVER-1200 reactors at the second site. .

Roman Babushkin called America’s Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) an “illegal tool for unlawful competition” and said that the agreement was not aimed at the US. Let us tell you that under CAATSA, America imposes sanctions on countries making defense deals with Russia. There were apprehensions that the US could impose sanctions on India under this law as well, but so far the situation regarding sanctions from the US is not clear.
