Maldives’ China Connection Worries India: Are Secret Deals a Cause for Concern?

  • by

India’s keeping a close eye on the Maldives since it has been getting uncomfortably friendly with China. Some worry that secret deals between the two could spell trouble for India’s position in the region.

Just after his election, President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives jetted off for a state visit with China. Reports say they made quite a few agreements – the fine print hasn’t been released though. Deals like this often cover things like trade, new infrastructure, and maybe even involvement in China’s big “Belt and Road” project.

This lack of transparency has the Indian government on edge. India’s made it clear to the Maldives: be careful of getting too mixed up with China and jeopardizing your own security.

Historically, India’s been like a helpful big brother to the Maldives, stepping in with aid and resources. But things have changed: China’s been throwing money at the Maldives and that’s shifted the dynamic.

This whole situation has definitely strained India and the Maldives’ relationship. It’s hard to say how things will shake out, especially with these two regional powerhouses competing for influence.
