Madrid Open: Signing a return to his best form, Novak Djokovic entered the third round of the Madrid Open tennis tournament with a straight sets defeat to Gael Monfils, where he will face Andy Murray. Djokovic called it his best performance of the year after beating Monfils 6-3, 6-2. The Serbian saved five break points while the Frenchman Monfils broke the serve three times.
Top seed Djokovic said, “I look at it as probably the best performance of the year. I really enjoyed being on the court. It was a great performance. I am very happy.” Three-time winner Djokovic will next face two-time champion Murray here in Madrid, who defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz continued his good run with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Nicolas Basilashvili. Earlier, Andrey Rublev of Russia defeated Britain’s 20-year-old Jack Draper 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 to enter the third round. Marin Cilic defeated Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, while Frances Tiafoe and Jenson Brooksby of America lost their first round matches in straight sets. Tiaffo was defeated by Christian Garin 6-1, 6-3 and Brooksby was defeated by Roberto Bautista Agut 6-0, 6-2.
In another match, Sebastian Korda defeated compatriot American Riley Opelka 6-3, 7-5. In the women’s section, Jessica Pegula of America defeated Bianca Andreescu 7-5, 6-1 and Sara Soribes Tormo of Spain defeated Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
