US President Joe Biden has reacted strongly to the Chinese dictatorship in Hong Kong and the decision to close the Apple Daily newspaper. He said it is a sad day for media freedom in Hong Kong and globally. Along with this, he has also lashed out at China.

President Biden said that because of Beijing’s repression, arrests, threats and a national security law that punishes in the name of speeches. Apple Daily, the independent journalism bastion in Hong Kong, has now ceased to be published.

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy newspaper ‘Apple Daily’, which challenges the Communist Party of China, will be shut down from Saturday this weekend. The decision was taken following the arrest of five editors and executive officers of the newspaper and the seizure of $2.3 million in assets belonging to the newspaper.

The board of directors said in a statement on Wednesday that its print edition and online edition would not be able to continue beyond Saturday due to the current situation in Hong Kong. Editors and officers were arrested on suspicion of colluding with foreigners to endanger national security.

Police cited more than 30 articles published by the newspaper as evidence of an alleged conspiracy to impose foreign sanctions on Hong Kong and China. The board of directors this week wrote to Hong Kong’s security bureau requesting it to release some of its funds so that the company can pay salaries.
