China’s top nuclear scientist and vice president of Harbin Engineering University, Zhang Zhijian, has died under mysterious circumstances after falling from a building. He has also been the Vice President of the Atomic Society of China. According to the South China Morning Post news, the university has said that the police have ruled out a murder due to lack of information from the investigation at the scene.

The university said in a statement that Harbin Engineering University is deeply saddened to report that Professor Zhang Zhijian fell from a building and died on June 17. There was no other official statement about Zhang’s death and his name remained on the leadership list on the university’s website until Friday.

Zhang was a professor at the College of Nuclear Science and Technology here. He was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party Committee in the University. He was also given the Qian Sanqiang Technology Award in 2019 for his contribution to nuclear energy simulation and safety research. Zhang also received the National Award for Excellence in Innovation from the central government in May last year.
